This is another good response that shows that our first response, legalistic answers aren’t always the best and that different people may have differing needs that we have never even thought about. Thanks for commenting.

God may use this as a tool to change them? Just a thought. As for myself I have Chronic bronchitis and CFS (Chronic Fatigue Synd) which lowers my immune system (and internal temp around 96.8) and its caused me to lose my hair. As a man I know we’re told ‘don’t be vain, show your baldness’, but I don’t see why a man or a women is vain wanting to hide baldness? Also my illnesses cause me to be very cold so wearing a beanie or hat keeps my head warm, do I have to wear a wig to please others? No, I am not there to conform to others, yet I don’t want to offend either! I am there to worship God, and to partake in the joy where the Holy Spirit fills the congregation with His love. I haven’t been to church because of rules that are man made, when I find one that allows me to wear my hat (that not only keeps me warm, but hides my balding head) then I’ll happily go. I’ve recently read one shouldn’t wear a hat at home while worshipping God, and on and on these works of man go on! Thank you for your article, lot’s to think upon. Lastly, hats can be a way to show your love of God by buying those with your love of Jesus written on the brim (for example).

I will just say that the history, poetry, letters, and prophecy in the Bible were not directly written to us – but for us. There are many situations in the Bible where we must apply the principle that was being taught because we don’t always have the same think happening in 2025 as was happening in the Jewish culture of 2000 plus years ago. The Bible is true, infallible, but we need to study it in context of who was writing, who were the primary readers at that time, what was happening in that culture, and what application does it hold for us today. You can depend on Paul and all of the writers of the inspired word of God. Thanks for commenting!

To say that was then, but it’s ok now makes me question other things Paul said. I thought the Bible was supposed to be complete. The Bible doesn’t mention about the religious leaders doing it back then. Did you get that from some extra biblical source? I would seriously love an answer because it makes me doubt Paul.

We think that well its ok for me to wear one so who cares about the one person who is now distracted because of it. While I understand that that person may have a heart issue it isn’t for me to decide that. My responsibility is to make sure my rights keep someone from coming to the throne room in worship. I believe that it is my responsibility to make sure that everyone in the congregation, including those online, are able to worship without distraction. This means that I have to practice humility even if I believe I am in my right to do so.

Unfortunately I also find that many churches where the worship team dresses down have watered down doctrine and accept what society wants to hear. It is that itching ear. Again not all churches are like that but the ones I have visited seem weak in biblical principles and doctrine.

Just my opinion.

I was encouraged that my dad wanted to join my church on zoom lately. Then I found out he is very offended that one of the men was wearing a hat while speaking and praying from the front. So this is helping me navigate that. Thank you. Blessings.

@Jack, I could care less if the pastor has a ball cap on. Is he speaking the truth from the word of God? Is his heart in the right place? Then why should I care?
I still don’t understand how it’s disrespectful. Is church supposed to be a black tie event? What am I missing here? I’ve seen plenty of well dressed church goers who appear polished up on Sundays but I wouldn’t recognize as followers of Christ otherwise.
The default should be to care more about the inward than the outward appearance. The Bible has way more to say on that than on hat wearing.
