Today: A Morning Prayer: and Featured Morning Song

Morning is a sacred time, a blank slate handed to us by God. It’s a perfect opportunity to pause, breathe, and submit the day ahead into His capable hands. One of the most beautiful ways to do this is through a morning prayer—a form of worship that connects our hearts directly to the heart of God.

Singing our prayers in the morning transforms the act into a heartfelt expression of submission, gratitude, and reliance. It sets the tone for the hours to come, reminding us of His presence and guidance. Inspired by this idea, I’ve written an original song, “Today: A Morning Prayer”, which I’m thrilled to share with you.

Let’s dive into how a morning prayer—and especially singing one—can enrich our daily walk with the Lord. Stick around to hear my song, and you’ll find a link to download it at the end!

Why Begin with a Morning Prayer?

A morning prayer is not just a habit but a powerful way to invite the Holy Spirit into your life. Before the chaos of the world sets in, before the pressures of work, family, or school overwhelm, pausing to pray reminds us of one truth: we cannot face the world alone.

The Bible repeatedly emphasizes seeking God early. David wrote, “O God, You are my God; early will I seek You” (Psalm 63:1). When we dedicate our mornings to Him, we invite His guidance into everything: conversations, decisions, challenges, and even blessings.

A morning prayer is like a spiritual compass—it keeps us aligned with God’s will. As James Montgomery, the hymn writer, once said, “Prayer is the soul’s sincere desire, uttered or unexpressed.” Imagine expressing that desire in song, pouring out your heart to God with every note.

Singing Your Morning Prayer: A Unique Expression of Worship

Music has a unique way of connecting us to God. Singing your prayers transforms them into a worship song, a personal hymn that aligns your spirit with His presence. Worship through music reaches deeper than words can alone—it stirs the soul and sets it ablaze with reverence.

“Today: A Morning Prayer” reflects this deeply personal act of singing a prayer to the Lord. This song holds a special place in my heart—it’s one I originally wrote years ago when I was part of one of my first Christian bands. It started as a simple, heartfelt prayer set to music, and just recently, I had the joy of recording this version.

I hope this song encourages you in your walk with the Lord and becomes part of your daily routine. Singing a morning prayer like this can remind us of our need to rely on Him every step of the way. Let me share the lyrics with you:

Lyrics: “Today: A Morning Prayer”

Today as I walk, today as I talk to my brother,
Lord give the words that I should say.
Today if I stumble, today if I fall,
Pick me up, Lord. Please guide my steps along the way.

(Chorus): Today I cannot make it on my own,
And I can’t face the world alone.
Lord, teach me how to lean on You,
See me through today…as I walk, as I talk to my brother,
Lord, tell me what to do and say.

(Chorus repeated): Today I cannot make it on my own,
And I can’t face the world alone.
Lord, teach me how to lean on You,
See me through today.
Lord, teach me how to lean on You,
See me through today.

Lessons from “Today: A Morning Prayer”

  1. Trust God to Guide Your Words
How often do we stumble over our words? Perhaps we speak in haste or fail to find the right thing to say. This song’s first verse is a plea for God’s guidance in our conversations. It echoes the principle of speaking only what is wholesome and edifying, as Paul writes in Ephesians 4:29.
  2. Depend on God’s Strength
The chorus captures a truth we can’t deny: “Today I cannot make it on my own.” Life’s burdens are too heavy, the challenges too great. Philippians 4:13 reassures us: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Singing this reminder at the start of the day prepares us to lean on Him when trials come.
  3. Seek God’s Guidance Every Step of the Way
The second verse reflects our need for God’s direction. Even when we stumble and fall, He’s there to pick us up. His Word is our guide—“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105).

Making a Morning Prayer a Daily Routine

Here’s how you can incorporate a morning prayer into your life:

  1. Set Aside Time
Begin with just five minutes. Whether you sing, read Scripture, or simply pray, start the day intentionally in God’s presence.
  2. Use Songs to Focus Your Heart
Play a worship song like “Showers of Blessings”, a public domain hymn, or even “Today: A Morning Prayer”. Songs like these remind us of God’s promises and set a tone of reliance.
  3. Ask the Holy Spirit for Guidance
Invite the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts, plans, and interactions. A prayer like “Dear God, help me honor You today” is simple yet powerful.
  4. Memorize a Verse
Keep a verse like James 1:5 in mind: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God.” Pray it as you go through your morning routine.

When you make a morning prayer a priority, you’re entrusting the day to God’s care. Singing your prayers adds a layer of beauty and intimacy, drawing you closer to Him. Let’s lean on Him and let Him guide us through each step, each word, each decision.

Closing Thought

Whether you’re singing a morning hymn, meditating on the Word of the Lord, or simply whispering, “O God, I need You today,” know that He hears and loves you. Let’s start every morning by saying, “Today, Lord, teach me how to lean on You.”

May this song bless you as it has blessed me. Let’s commit every new day to Him—because we can’t face the world alone.
