In all of my life of ministry, teaching, leading worship, and simply living my life the greatest thing that I have ever learned about is the grace of God. God’s grace is one of the most amazing gifts that he has given us. It is the unmerited favor provided by God as He gave his one and only Son, Jesus Christ to pay for our sins and give us new life today.
Grace is something that we cannot earn or deserve. In this post, we will explore some of the top Bible verses about grace. We will discuss what they mean to us and how we can apply them to our lives. It is by the grace of God through Christ Jesus that we can have peace in the present age and eternal life.
Bible verses about grace are prevalent throughout the scriptures. They are some of the most exciting and compelling verses in Scripture. Christian salvation can only be received by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.” Ephesians 2:8-9
Bible Verses About Grace – Salvation Offered
Let’s look at some Bible verses about grace that clearly tell us that it is only by God’s grace that we can be saved and forgiven of our sins.
“For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.”
Titus 2:11
Even though some people will, unfortunately, refuse to accept it, God’s grace – His unmerited favor is offered to everyone who will receive it. Let’s pray that more and more people will receive Jesus Christ as their Savior, love God supremely, and celebrate this grace God gives us!
“He is so rich in kindness and grace that he purchased our freedom with the blood of his Son and forgave our sins.”
Ephesians 1:7
Jesus Christ purchased our freedom with his sacrifice on the cross. We are justified freely if we have received His grace because our Lord Jesus Christ died and rose again, giving us the free gift of grace.
“But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)“
Ephesians 2:-5
We should all get the picture here that our salvation, our free gift of eternal life from God, is only because of God’s grace exhibited in the death burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We have no power to save ourselves and have a relationship with Jesus Christ by our good works. We can only call on Him to find grace and receive mercy because his grace is sufficient to save us from our sins.
“For the sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.”
Romans 5:17
This is such an incredible verse above. The “fall of man” caused sin to come into the world separating mankind from the perfect relationship with God. However, all who have put their faith in Christ Jesus and received grace from Him, also receive his incredible love and mercy from our heavenly father – plus eternal salvation!
“When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. Because of his grace he made us right in his sight and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life.”
Titus 3:4-7
Once again, we must remember this. We must remember that we CAN NOT be good enough, kind enough, or do enough good works to receive salvation from God (to be born-again, receive Christ, be saved). Our works will always fall short. It is only by His grace, the incredible gift of God that we can obtain the mercy to be saved.
Bible Verses About Grace – To Live Our Daily Lives
It is only by Christ’s power that the Holy Spirit comes into our lives. When we receive Christ as Savior we can live Godly lives. Christians do not live lives of perfection. However, since we have a great God living through us in the presence of the Holy Spirit, we have access to the great power of God.
God Provides Freedom From Sin’s Power
“Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.”
Romans 6:14
Yes, as Christians we can still fall into sin. However, it does not have to be our master any longer. Jesus took our sins and our old selves to the cross with Him so that we can have new life!
“We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.”
Romans 6:6-7
Only In the Power of God
We must realize that God does not need the human power that we bring to the table. However, He will let His great power work in us for whatever the task might be. It’s not that we totally give up and don’t try, but it is that we acknowledge that Jesus is our power source for any situation.
He will give us the wisdom and power to live our lives knowing that we have access to the same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead.
We are not living alone anymore after we have encountered Christ’s power. We have the power of God through the Holy Spirit to live through us, act through us, and encourage us. God’s grace is always available!
“The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you.”
Romans 8:11
There is a spiritual dynamic where we are much stronger allowing the grace and power of God to live in and through us rather than rely on our human strength and emotions.
This shows up over and over in scripture. The Apostle Paul struggled with a problem, perhaps a physical ailment, the Bible is not clear about it. However, Paul had prayed intensely that God would take it away and it appears that He did not. This is the answer that came:
“Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
2 Corinthians 12:8-10
This doesn’t mean that we can’t be strong as believers. It’s just a matter of who we are depending on for our strength. It’s just that in our own power we will fall short of the amazing things that the Lord Jesus can do on a daily basis.
In another Bible translation, it says God’s “power is made perfect in weakness.” Do we get the picture that he wants us to trust Him because his grace is sufficient for every need?
This verse in 2 Corinthians sums it up well:
“And God is able to make all grace overflow to you, so that, always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed.”
2 Corinthians 9:8
In some other Bible translations, it says “grace will abound.” There never will be a point in our lives where God has no more grace.
Bible Verses About God’s Grace – His Righteousness in Us
As Christians, we desperately need to wrap our minds around how loved we are in God’s sight. He has made us new in Christ Jesus. It’s not just that we now have everlasting life, but we have been declared righteous because of His grace.
God has given us salvation in Christ Jesus and that gift is not only for everlasting life in the future. Yes, if we have received grace from God we will have everlasting life. However, it starts now, even in this life on earth. His grace is sufficient for everything that we will encounter on this planet. He gives us the life of Christ now.
We are no longer just sinners in God’s sight. We have been saved through faith and declared righteous in His sight. We are justified freely from our former sins and all the saints of God are seen as righteous in God’s sight.
“He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
2 Corinthians 5:21
And when we have received Christ as our Savior being declared righteous, that means we have a new identity because we have trusted in God’s one and only Son for our salvation.
We have a holy calling from God to live our lives for the glory of God. We are called by God to turn away from our sins and worldly passions. It’s not that Christians are prudes and can’t have any fun. Christians have the capacity for joy that the Bible says is unspeakable.
One awesome thing to celebrate is the fact that we have a ‘”New Identity,” We are righteous. We are holy. We are new creations. We have the Spirit of Christ living in and through us. And, because of God’s grace, we are no longer slaves to sin because of the power of Jesus Christ.
And because of this new identity we have as a result of the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, we are called Saints of God. When the Apostle, Paul addresses the people in his letters to the young churches he consistently addresses them as “Saints.”
“To the church of God which is in Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:”
1 Corinthians 1:2 (NASB)
“Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are at Ephesus and are faithful in Christ Jesus:”
Ephesians 1:1 (NASB)
It is because of the grace He gives to us and Christ’s payment of our sins on the cross that He calls us saints. We have been programmed and taught that a saint is someone who has achieved great deeds or performed miracles. However, the Holy Bible doesn’t speak of Saints in that way.
A saint is someone who has received the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior to the glory of God. A saint is you or me who has been declared righteous by God the Father when we put our faith and trust in the Lord Jesus.
Bible Verses About Grace – Access To God
I enjoy the bible verses about grace that illustrate what incredible access we have to God. I love the book of Hebrews as the writer speaks of how we can approach God’s throne because of His grace. Jesus Christ was the sacrifice for our sins and now He is also our faithful “High Priest” in which all the saints can come to Him with confidence.
When we think of Bible verses about grace, this one tells us about the magnitude in which HIs grace is sufficient enough that we can come boldly to Him, not arrogantly – and bring our petitions and all of our problems to Him.
“So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.”
Hebrews 4:14-16
When it comes to Bible verses about grace, I love this verse so much because – when do need to receive mercy and grace the most? Yes, we need grace and mercy the most when we are….. needy. You are welcomed to come before God when you have failed, or you are depressed, or upset in some way. He gives us that privilege because of His grace. If you are a born-again child of God you don’t have to grovel and beg to approach God’s throne in prayer.
Sure, sometimes we need to acknowledge our sins to God and turn away from those sins, but we have a standing invitation to come and receive grace and mercy. There is always more grace available from God. He never runs out.
Look at a verse of a famous old hymn, “He Giveth More Grace”.
“He giveth more grace as our burdens grow greater, He sendeth more strength as our labors increase; To added afflictions, He addeth His mercy, To multiplied trials, He multiplies peace.” by Annie Johnson Flint
Our Great God “giveth grace” that is always in abundance.
As we mentioned, God will never run out of grace. When we accept Christ as our Savior, He promises to supply everything that we need. Look at this incredible and stirring passage from 2nd Peter, chapter 1:
“This letter is from Simon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to you who share the same precious faith we have. This faith was given to you because of the justice and fairness of Jesus Christ, our God and Savior.
May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord. By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.”
2nd Peter 1:1-3
More Bible Verses About Grace
I don’t think it is an accident that one of the most famous hymns in the entire world is a song that is simply titled “Amazing Grace.” The first verse of the song tells us enough about this grace that it would take years to unpack.
“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost but now am found, t’was blind but now I see.”
Let’s end with a few more wonderful verses from the word of God about this amazing grace.
”He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.“
2 Timothy 1:10
Jesus came to Earth in human form and lived here for 33 years. He came and was full of grace and truth. He came to bring the truth about who God was. However, in everything Jesus did, he did it with grace while never sacrificing the truth.
”And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us; and we saw His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14
“May God give you more and more grace and peace as you grow in your knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord.”
2 Peter 1:2
The grace of God is one of the most amazing gifts that he has given us. It is something that we cannot earn or deserve. In this article, we will explore some of the top Bible verses about grace. We will discuss what they mean for you and how you can apply them to your life.
There are many more passages that talk about grace specifically or indirectly. It is at the very center of our faith. Grace is always in abundance, and God continually provides it when we need it most. We are able to come to God because of His grace, and not because of our good behavior. Grace is what makes us righteous in God’s sight and accepted unconditionally.
Because of grace, if we repent and turn to Jesus, we are made right in His sight. We receive grace through Christ Jesus and are freed from the penalty for our sins. Grace and peace can be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. As we grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, may God continue to provide us with grace when we need it most.
